Welcome to Second Grade!!
I am Mrs. Beth Smith, your ELA (English/Language Arts) teacher!
We are going to have SO much fun in class this year!
This will be my 28th year of teaching. I have taught kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. I have been a teacher at Middleton Elementary for twenty years. I love my job because I love kids and I love reading!
I am married to Tim. We have just celebrated our 28th anniversary.
I have two children, Jamie and Kaitlyn.
This year, we are going to be doing lots of fun things in my class. We will read (a lot), do some different types of writing, we will learn to do cursive, and we will do some fun activities with our stories (like making astronaut pudding and s’mores!)
I am looking forward to an awesome year with all of the second grade students!
Welcome to Mrs. Beth’s 2 nd Grade Reading Class for 2019-2020. I am so excited to begin a new year with a new group of sutdents. I just wanted to touch base with all of my parents to inform you of a few things that you need to know to help your child be successful in my class and in 2 nd grade.
First, your child is required to get 5 AR points every week. They will receive a reading grade on Friday, depending on how many points they get. See the grading scale below for weekly AR points. Your child can read and take tests during any of their classes, and between 7:30-8:00 in the morning. They will not have enough time to get the 5 points during reading class alone.
Second, we will start the year taking Sight Word Tests. Each week for 11 weeks, your child will read the sight words for that week. I will send the testing dates, as well as the word lists home with your child so that you can study accordingly.
Next, once we begin our stories for 2 nd grade, your child will bring a skills sheet home each Monday. This sheet will have their spelling words, vocabulary words, and any reminders for the week on it. They will be tested on these words on Friday of each week. For spelling tests I will call out the word and use it in a sentence. They will write the word. For the vocabulary words, they will be given sentences with the vocabulary word left out. They will have to fill in the blank with the correct word. So, they should be able to use each word correctly as they study it throughout the week.
Fourth, your child will have Reading homework on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights. Please look at their planner each night for the assignments. You will also find any notes in the planner about their behavior for the day and any reminders that they might need you to know. Make sure that you initial their planner each night.
Next, it is good character training to see that your child is punctual and regular in his/her attendance. School begins each day at 8:00 AM. Please make every effort to get your child here on time. If your child is eating breakfast at school, please have them here before 7:45. If your child is absent, a note should be sent to school the day he/she returns stating the reason for the absence.
Finally, please send a note if your child is to go home a different way from what they usually do in the afternoon. Also, remember that your child should follow the Standard Dress Policy set forth by the Hardeman County Board of Education.
I am looking forward to working with you and especially your child. We are going to have a SUPER year! I am always available if you have any concerns. You can call the school if you need me, write a note, or send a message on Remind or Class Dojo. Thank you in advance for your support.

Mrs. Marcy’s 2nd Grade Class
I am very excited about beginning a new school year. For those that don’t know me, my name is Marcy Clifton and this is my 10th year of teaching at Middleton Elementary School. I have been married for 20 years and have a son that will be a senior this fall.
This year I will be teaching Social Studies and Science. We will be changing classes this year as well. Mrs. Beth will be teaching your child Reading/Language Arts, and Ms. Moore will be teaching them Math. A lot of thought and hard work has been devoted to making this year the very best it can be.
I believe that each child can succeed.
Therefore, I have very high expectations for all of my students. I have included some information to help you and your child become familiar with my expectations for the school year. Please review these with your child. If you have any questions, please feel free to send a note or call me at school.
I am looking forward to a great year with this class. Thank you for your cooperation in getting this year off to a great start.

Be Responsible – have your supplies ready.
My name is Stacy Moore and I am so excited to be your teacher this year!

can’t wait to start this year at the school I went to in 2nd grade!
GOALS FOR THIS YEAR:
We are going to do and learn lots of things this year! To be able to do, we must remember the simple rules of being respectful to others around, being accountable for our classwork and homework, and be responsible for yourself and kind to others. A few things we will cover this year will be addition and subtraction, place value, and measurement.
